Introducing Picazo’s Subject Lifter

Picazo’s Subject Lifter takes the main subject of a photo — a person, a pet, a product — and puts it on its own layer, exactly where it was, so nothing jumps. It’s selected straight away: drag it to a new spot, make it bigger or smaller, or turn it.

The cut-out is made in your browser by the same model as our free background remover, so the lift itself costs nothing. Behind the subject, you choose: fill the background, and the gap it leaves is painted in by the Object Removal eraser, or leave the photo underneath as it was. Lift and fill are one step in your history, so one Undo puts the photo back.

HOW IT WORKS

How to use Lift Subject.

  1. Open the photo in the editor

    Upload a photo, paste one in or use a picture already on your page, then select it so the tool knows which one to lift from.

  2. Choose what goes behind

    Fill the background rebuilds what the subject was covering, for 4 AI credits. Leave the background as it is keeps the photo untouched underneath, and is free.

  3. Lift the subject

    Press Lift subject. The cut-out takes a few seconds in your browser (longer the very first time, while the model downloads), then the subject appears on its own layer, selected.

  4. Move it while the gap fills

    Drag, resize or turn the subject straight away. If you chose to fill, the background is painted in underneath a few seconds later.

  5. Finish and download

    Add text, shapes or more photos, then download as PNG, JPG, PDF or SVG. One Undo brings back the photo as it was.

Your questions, answered

What counts as the subject?+
Whatever stands out from the background as the main thing in the photo: a person or a group, a pet, a product, a car. The cut-out uses BRIA’s RMBG-1.4, the model behind our free background remover. If nothing stands out clearly, you’ll see a message and nothing on your page changes.
What does the filled-in background look like?+
Only the area the subject covered is painted in, plus a few pixels around its edge so no outline of it is left behind. The rest of the photo keeps its own pixels. The fill is made by Bria Eraser, the same model as Object Removal.
What if the fill fails, or I’m out of credits?+
Your subject stays lifted and the photo under it stays exactly as it was; you’re told the gap wasn’t filled. A fill that fails on our side gives its credits back.
Does it keep the photo’s size and angle?+
Yes. The subject is placed exactly over where it was, at the photo’s size, rotation and flip, so nothing moves until you drag it. Its layer is cropped to the subject, which keeps the photo’s own pixels, read at up to 2,048 pixels on the longest side.
Is my photo uploaded?+
The cut-out happens on your device. Only when you choose Fill the background are the photo and a mask of the gap sent to our AI provider to paint it in. With Leave the background as it is, nothing goes to an AI provider.
